Dementia Education: Putting Understanding Into Practice

For years, we’ve used Alzheimer’s Association education resources to deepen our understanding of dementia and support thoughtful salon experiences.
A familiar salon visit can be about much more than a haircut. Feeling recognized, respected and at ease matters, especially for residents living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.
The Alzheimer’s Association’s Education and Training Center has been a resource for our team for years. Its learning opportunities help us keep empathy and understanding at the center of the salon experience.
The center offers online and in-person education, with resources for the public and professionals. Topics include understanding Alzheimer’s and dementia, communication, and responding to changes in behavior.
For our Salon Professionals, that learning supports an approach grounded in patience, listening and respect for each resident’s preferences. For community partners and families, it reinforces the thoughtfulness behind an everyday salon visit.
We’re sharing this established resource to encourage continued learning across our teams and the communities we serve. It’s one way we put People, Empathy and Respect into practice.
